New Testmanet Study: John 13-17
Continue Ye In My Love
To introduce this weeks lesson “Continue Ye in my Love” I want to touch on the 3 main topics in the Come Follow Me
- Jesus wants me to serve others
- I show my love for Jesus Christ by keeping his commandments
- The Holy Ghost helps me feel closer to Jesus
I like to introduce these first so that you can have them fresh in your mind as you prepare your lesson. Typically I pick one topic as the main focus when I teach. I then will lightly touch on the other two if time allows.
Questions and Prompts-Lesson Outline
The first item I have for you to help teach is the Question and Prompt sheet. I share one of these for each less. It is what I personally use as my lesson outline. It is a simple question and prompt sheet you can literally ask your class. If you follow this sheet you can touch on each of the three topics I just listed above. I did something a little different this week. There are now lines marking the transition from one topic to the next. I hope this makes it a little more organized as you teach.
Lesson Idea #1
Jesus wants me to serve others
The first lesson Idea I have for you comes from the following prompt in CFM:
Ask the children how they feel when someone helps them. Let the children draw pictures of how they can follow Jesus’s example by serving someone.
I have created a free coloring page to help inspire your class as you learn about Jesus serving others. This coloring page would be great for younger classes in particular. If you have an older class I have a second page that is Pre-Colored. You can put this up at the front of the board and ask your class how they can serve others.
Lesson Idea #2
I show my love for Jesus Christ by keeping His commandments.
The second lesson Idea for “Continue Ye in my Love” goes with the 2nd topic. “I show my love for Jesus Christ by keeping His commandments”. It comes from the following lesson prompt in CFM
- Give each child a paper heart to decorate. Invite them to hold up their hearts every time they sing the word “love” in “Jesus Said Love Everyone” and “Love One Another,” Children’s Songbook, 61, 136.
Lesson Idea #3 “Continue Ye in My love”
This next idea also fits into the same lesson topic. This lesson activity comes from the following prompt in CFM:
Help the children memorize John 14:15 by holding up their paper hearts as they say, “If ye love me,” and a picture of stone tablets as they say, “Keep my commandments.”
My idea varies a little from this suggestion. I have printed the 2 scriptures about following Jesus onto 3 little hearts. With the following prompt “How can we show our love for Jesus Christ?”
Together you can learn more about what the scriptures say about following the commandments and our love for the Savior. Additionally you can use them to memorize John 14:15
Lesson Idea #4
The Holy Ghost helps me feel closer to Jesus.
The last lesson idea goes with the 3rd topic. “The Holy Ghost helps me feel closer to Jesus”. This idea comes from this idea in CFM:
Although the children you teach haven’t yet received the gift of the Holy Ghost, they can learn now how the power of the Holy Ghost works in their lives.
Using this prompt and the scriptures provide I created 3 cards that include
Use these to talk about the Holy Ghost and why its so important.
